Each piece is a begins as an original charcoal painting using charcoal found in the Malibu mountains. I work with charcoal much like paint — crushing and layering the powder onto paper with brushes and smudging tools. Charcoal twigs are used for marks and details, while an eraser is used to lift the charcoal and uncover the light from the paper for highlights and form.

The fragile originals are photographed and pigment-printed on 100% cotton rag paper, creating a stable, archival reproduction. The process and materials preserve every detail of the original charcoal work, including its depth and texture, as well as the subtle way light falls across the surface of the paper.

Each print is then mounted on birch panel, and hand-embellished with Malibu charcoal again — bringing a part of the physical landscape back to each piece.
